November 9, 2023
New aiM trainees were welcomed in August 2023 with our orientation/ boot camp event with technical and professional development sessions.
Some changes to the event this year included a focus on peer-to-peer teaching. Senior trainees led many of the sessions including Yingfan Wang (CS) on machine learning methods, Sam McDonald (Chemistry) on FAIR data, Quinn Lanners (Biostatistics) and Po-An Lin (MEMS) on computing resources, and Richard Sheridan (MEMS Research Scientist) on Data management. Students served on panels about interdisciplinary research, internships, and getting involved in program-related activities. The Duke Pratt Graduate Communications and Intercultural Programs team shared a workshop on public science communications.
With the goal of promoting aiM community engagement and providing trainees with leadership opportunities, the aiM Student Leadership Council reconvened with some new members. Po-An Lin (cohort 1, MEMS) and Aiden Sable (cohort 2, MEMS) returned as Co-chairs. Committees within the SLC are responsible for leading monthly All-cohort student meetings along with organizing peer-to-peer teaching sessions, guest speaker presentations, media production, K-12 outreach events, and aiM social events.
